The way in.

The 101 bootcamp is the practical choice for a new skater. Go straight to Cheeseskates only if you already have the listed skating skills. Check the Springfield commute: the league name alone does not tell you where you will practice.

The eight-week 101 bootcamp teaches the foundation: stance, stops, falls, stepping, crossovers, transitions and backwards skating. Cheeseskates is a separate six-month derby pathway and expects those foundations already, including obstacle avoidance. Its next cohort is described as early 2027.

The beginner page places every bootcamp session at Hockey Dek, outside central Philadelphia. Check the actual evening trip in both directions. The joining instructions require both league and venue waivers.

October bootcamp listedThe published fall 2026 bootcamp starts Sunday, October 4 at 4:30 p.m. The league gives an eight-week syllabus; confirm the remaining dates and finish time in the registration response.

The fall 2026 listing gives a $60 course fee, payable to hold the place, and describes payments as non-refundable. Gear, insurance and future Cheeseskates dues are not priced on this page. Check those items directly rather than treating $60 as the full cost of joining derby.

A loaner offer is not stated on the bootcamp page. Ask what equipment is needed for the first class and whether your sizes can be supplied.

Who the program is for

The 101 bootcamp explicitly welcomes all genders, ages 18+. Ask separately about the eligibility and assessment requirements for competitive league play.
